There have been many current and upcoming hotel projects to cater for the growing number of guests staying overnight in Hong Kong in recent years, especially from mainland China. 2015 and 2016 were difficult years for Hong Kong's hotel industry, with drops in visitor numbers and occupancy rates, but 2017 and 2018 saw a recovery. However, the impact of the government protests in mid-2019, which saw a significant drop in overnight arrivals, had a serious impact on the hotel sector, as occupancy rates continued to deteriorate into early 2020, with little prospect of recovery soon. At the start of 2021, there were around 17 new hotel projects with originally tentative completion dates before the end of the year and another 8 scheduled for completion by the end of 2022. There has been a drop in visitor numbers to almost zero since early 2020 and some new hotel openings scheduled for 2020 and 2021 postponed until the situation improves, and visitors from mainland China in particular, who make up 75% of Hong Kong's overnight visitors, are returning in large numbers. From December 2020 to September 2022, up to 60 hotels served as quarantine hotels for arriving travelers, quarantine for foreign domestic workers, and quarantine for close contacts of people who have tested positive for COVID. After two rounds of the Hong Kong Tourism Board's "Staycation Delights" promotion and other staycation activities, and in conjunction with the designation of some hotels for quarantine purposes, the hotel's room occupancy rate was 62% in the first 11 months of 2021, a year-on-year comparison. annual increase of 17%.

In May 2013, the government launched tenders to convert the 27-story Murray Building on Cotton Tree Drive into a luxury hotel next to the Peak Tram terminus in Central. In September 2013, approval was granted for the conversion of a Victorian style villa at 27 Lugard Road in The Peak, listed as a historic building, into a Grade I listed 17 suite hotel in a controversial project due for completion in the beginning of 2016. The site was acquired by Crown Empire, an overseas registered company, for HK$383.8 million and will be developed by Butterfly Hotel and Serviced Apartment Group. Local councils and members of the public opposed the plans due to concerns about the suitability of the narrow 1.8 meter Lugard Road for access, as well as the visual and environmental impact. In June 2015, plans were submitted to demolish two adjacent industrial buildings on Hong Ting Road off Hiram's Highway in Sai Kung City and replace them with an 8-story, 294-room hotel. If approved, the new hotel should be ready for completion in 2020.

2015 saw unfavorable market conditions for Hong Kong's hospitality industry, with a decline in tourist numbers, particularly from mainland China. In February 2017, Henderson Land reached a conditional agreement to sell the Newton Inn hotel on Chun Yeung Street in North Point to Shun Ho Property Investment for approximately HK$1 billion. The hotel has since been renamed the Grand View Hotel and Shun Ho Property has applied for permission to convert the hotel into an office. Shun Ho Property also purchased the Rosedale Hotel in Causeway Bay from the Bank of China in June 2017 and has also applied for approval to convert this property into an office when the existing contract with Rosedale Hotel Holdings expires in 2020.
